Message I was shocked to hear of Eddies passing. If a new appliance was on its way to us Eddie often knew before I did. One of the last times I seen him was at the Chief Fire Officers Conference in Limerick (May 2011). He was 100 foot in the air looking down on the world from the highest reach of County Donegal's new Hydraulic Platform. I imagine he is doing something similar now. Blue's & Two's is a credit to him.

Sincere condolences to Eddies family and friends.

While I only met Eddie once at the IHRN awards a couple of years ago I was instantly struck by what a lovely man he was. We had a good chat, and laugh before doing what we did best. Was pleasure meeting Eddie, I do regret not returning sooner and spending time with Eddie on some of his fantastic visits I read about.

I hope this website continues to grow in your memory Eddie!

Message I am very, very saddenned to hear of the passing of the very man who assisted me into my first forays in the fire engine preservation world back in 2005. I have never forgotten the man Mr Eddie Gentles who rang a complete stranger one evening in April 2005 about a 1979 Dennis RS in Co. Clare that needed rescuing. 7 years on and half a dozen fire engines later, I can say without a doubt that I would not be where I am today, or have made the many friends I have in the fire service, without the kind help of Eddie Gentles over the years, from supplying contacts to vehicle histories, I only met Eddie once or twice but he was the same in person as he was on this website, a true gentleman, who would go out of his way to help you. Eddie, you will never be forgotten, the vehicles that are preserved and the website you ran so well are a fitting testament to the person you were. Thanks for eberything Eddie, rest in piece my friend. You will be sadly missed. Mark Phipps, Dublin, Ireland.

Message I was absolutely shocked to hear of Eddie's passing. From my very first contact with him many years ago, I have always been impressed with his enthusiasm and genuine politeness in the way in which he approached me whenever he was looking for information, visiting Dublin Airport on many occassions, always smiling and carrying his camera at the ready. The excitement he showed with new vehicle deliveries and his willingness to help with historical information showed what a friend Eddie was of the fire services nationally.

The greatest tribute to Eddie would be for Blues and Twos to go from strength to strength in the future.

Eddie will be sadly missed by his family and many thousands of friends in the emergency services. Ar dheis lamh Dé go raibh a anam.

Message I just heard this morning, Eddie was a true gentleman and a legend in the fire service community. He will be sadly missed. Eddie was always there to give a hand if the history of an appliance was needed or an obscure photo. He gave me a dig out quite a few times with historical section of the website. I had the pleasure of meeting Eddie a couple of times and as I said, a true gent.

Message Eddie,

I don',t mean to offend you, it is a ok site but do you or don't you have your favourite stations or countys, take louth for instance, only some of the county has updates, Drogheda seem to get it all, Cork gets a lot of attention also, Anyway i will keep checking in.

Message John,
I refute your claim to being 'one-sided'. What I am attempting to do isn't easy when one cannot get information. Not all brigades/acfo's are obliging!
Over the last few years I have put this site together with help from a 'few'. It is an ongoing process and instead of you being NEGATIVE perhaps YOU might like to 'share' the info you have. I will be only too willing to UPDATE the site. Since January we have updated 5 complete counties with another to come next month
Hoping to hear from you
Regards
Eddie

It looks great . Though it is higher than the other 2 dennis t.ls.

Given the number of low railway bridges around the station , I wonder how it will manage.

Has anyone noticed how small the storage compartments are on the new dfb e.t with the hiab; Did it really need a double crew cab.

Message Just looking at your site, really good. I,m from a fire station called Brunswick Heads 240 in northern new south wales Australia. Our pumpers are quiet different but i notice the gear we carry is very similar. Our station is into memorabilia. If anybody out there wants to swap insignia or t shirts give me a call we will be happy to talk

Message Jonny.....Got this reply from David Lennox:

IIA 2192 died on the way to an incident almost 2 years ago. By all accounts the engine fell to pieces as they drove along the road. Rumour has it that a radio message was sent saying the crew were sweeping the bits into plastic bags!!

It was recovered to Crescent Link station and to the best of my knowledge is still there, although I stand to be corrected on that one.

Regards,

David

I'm not sure about Kilrea's old control unit in particular, but I do know that the NIFRS sold a few Commer units through 'Wilson's Auctions' who advertise with various photos of old appliances they may have - in the AutoTrader.

I don't have any photo of that appliance BUT I'm checking with a few others.

If you could give me the chassis/body number I will be able to get the UK reg....maybe someone in the UK will have a photo of when it was in the UK.

The chassis/body number is on a plate behind the clutch & brake pedals.

Best of luck

Message Just heard about the site and I must say I am very impressed, all aspects covered but what about poor old Dublin Airport?
I am sending you some items by post that may be of interest and perhaps you can include D.A.F.S. in your excellent site.
Well done! JC

Message Great site! Very interesting and photographs are superb! I have a keen interest in Staffordshire appliances, so great to see that some of ours saw a second life service over in Ireland.
Keep up the good work. I have one or two photo's of ex Staffordshire appliances in Ireland, always looking for more though.

Message Hi Eddie, your insight into the Irish fire Service scene is most welcome. It would be my hope that through your initiative, correspondents who visit this site will research their local history in order that a comprehensive record of the part played by the Irish Fire service can be recorded for posterity.

Message Sensational website, I look forward to any future developments. Its always interesting to see what other countries are running, and its actually very similar to home. I really enjoy the preserved appliances section.
One thing I would like to see is a list of shows for historic vehicles for us tourist types that may wish to see them.

Message Alan.....

Firstly, thanks for your kind comments - with regards to a forum I had thought about it BUT the Irishfireservice.com page runs an excellent forum and I will, for the present anyway, concentrate on the current format. EVERYONE is encouraged however to submit photo's or items of interest including sightings for inclusion on the Notice Board

Thanks again,

Eddie
